Jonas Schiff was born in Germany and died 13 Jul 1903 Charlotte, NC. He married Ida Davidson of Hanover Germany in 1858 when he went back to visit.
He and his wife returned to North Carolina and remained in Thomasville until 1868. They moved to Charlotte and opened a tannery & harness business.
1872 started a wholesale and grocery business with his brother (unk right now), bro retired and business became Schiff & Grier (again ukn). In the meantime Schiff had established a factory for the manufacture of plug tobacco. Factory destroyed by fire and not resumed. He gave up the tannery and harness business to focus on wholesale and grocery. Upon the death of Mr. Grier, Lewis N Schiff (j Shiff's only son) aquired an interest in the buisness which continued as Schiff & Co.
