Following Clues in Census Records
Let’s start with Demie Caldwell Saunders. Thorough the family, we know that Demie was born in 1876 and died in 1959. We also know that her mother’s name was Tama Caldwell.
I have spent countless hours trying to locate Tama in the 1870 census to no avail, but one of the biggest clues I came across was the 1880 census. To the right is a snapshot of page 12 of the Simpsonville Township, Rockingham County, North Carolina 1880 Census. Demie is shown in line 45 and her mother’s listed name is not shown as Tama, but rather Nainpr or something like that. Delving into the 1880 census shows that there were individuals with the surname Napier or Napper in the same area. So taking that, I began to test the theory that her last name was or had been Napier.
